MEDIA RELEASE
ALASKA WILDLAND FIRE PREVENTION and PREPAREDNESS WEEK
The Alaska Division of Forestry is announcing that Governor Palin has proclaimed May 12th to the 18th as Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Week in Alaska. While ecosystems depend on the natural fire regime to maintain forest health and provide a range of wildlife habitats, human-caused wildfires often occur in areas near homes and businesses. These fires in the wildland-urban interface may pose a threat to residents and firefighters alike. Public awareness of wildland fire prevention practices and home preparedness measures is essential for public safety.
Fires start readily and spread fast during May, especially in the dry, cured grasses. If homeowners plan to burn leaf and debris piles this spring, they must take proper precautions; this includes getting a burning permit and strictly adhering to the terms on the permit.
Every year the Division of Forestry responds to wildfires caused by residents burning in burn barrels. A burn barrel must be set up to specific guidelines including a dirt clearing at least 10 feet wide around the barrel and a metal mesh screen that is expanded to a maximum of 5/8ths inch.
Any fire must be attended to until it is out. If a person lights a fire that escapes control due to inadequate preparedness, they may be subject to criminal penalties for violation of the Alaska Statutes. As residents become aware of the fire danger level and knowledgeable about safe burning practices, the number of wildfires can be reduced.
Another key component of a FireWise population is for home and business owners to take steps to reduce the ignitibility of their property. This includes, but is not limited to, clearing flammable materials from on and around structures and enclosing openings into eaves and under decks. Every step taken will improve the chances of surviving a devastating wildfire. Each person must know that they can make a difference with wildfire prevention and protection of their property.
